Plantable Wedding Favors

July 27, 2009

Giving plantable wedding favors in the form of seeds or plants has become very popular in recent years. Especially with those couples who are planning a garden wedding or are using the seasons of spring or summer as a theme for their wedding.

There are actually several types of plantable wedding favor available. Here are just a few to give you some ideas:

  • Seed packets – these are the easiest to put together and if you can make personalized packets for them, they make very unique favors.
  • Plantable cards – you will see these in many of the favor stores. There are biodegradable cards with seeds embedded in them. The cards come in a range of different designs and all your guests need to do is plant them when they get home.
  • Bulbs – perfect for a spring wedding. Two bulbs in a box on a bed of shredded tissue make a lovely natural looking favor.
  • Tree saplings – these are popular with eco-friendly weddings. Check out your local garden center for small saplings which are the perfect height for favors. Just be aware though that some of your guests may not have room for a large tree at home!
  • Herbs – you could give these in seed form as a little collection of different herbs or as plants. Either way they make a nice fragrant favor.
  • House plants – garden centers and even supermarkets stock house plants these days and they can make a lovely lasting gift to your guests. Look for varieties that are easy to maintain.
  • Garden plants – you could bring these on at home yourself from seed. Simply sow the seeds in a tray and then prick them out once they are big enough to go in a pot. Make sure you get your timing right so that they will be of a reasonable size by the time the wedding comes around.

When choosing plantable favors you can coordinate them to your wedding by giving varieties of flower that are present in your wedding flowers. Plants like miniature rose bushes are a popular choice and look very pretty on your tables if you can get ones that are in flower.

There are also some favors available that are a mini flower garden kit. They include seeds, labels and planting instructions all presented in a nice tin. Other variations of this include seed packets and mini herb gardens.

Take care with the varieties you choose and make sure that they will grow in the climate of your guest’s homes. Exotic species may not last long if you live in a climate which is prone to cold spells, frost or snow and ice! Likewise, if you choose to give tree saplings, mighty pines may not be the best choice!
