How to Be the Perfect Wedding Guest
September 3, 2009
There’s one bad guest at every wedding. While it makes for good blooper videos, ruining a wedding isn’t funny. Wedding etiquette don’ts:
Stumble in late Being over an hour late is acceptable if you’re attending your regular “Jerks Anonymous” meeting. Unless you’re Elvis or God, it’s never okay to waltz into the middle of a wedding ceremony. If you’re in the wedding party, lateness takes on a whole new level of jerkdom. Get a GPS system if you’re still using that lame “I was lost” excuse.
Disrespect the wedding party. Love is in the air and you’re a single gal or guy on the prowl. But you don’t want to be known as the wedding guest groper. Keep your cheesy pick-up lines and if you’re looking for love, ask the other guests to dance.
Don’t use your cell phone Unless the bride and groom ask you to Twitter their entire wedding process, don’t use pull out your iPhone. Leave it at home or make sure it’s on silent.
Don’t comment on the bride and groom’s future children. At every wedding, there’s that one guest who thinks it’s acceptable to make bets on when the bride and groom will procreate. It’s not. While it’s okay to ask the happy couple about their future plans, it’s not okay to ask whether the bride’s pregnant or whether the couple plans to conceive anytime soon.
Stuff yourself Let’s be honest: Most of us attend weddings for the free food, open bar and the promise of cake. Don’t let the other guests catch on that you’re looking more forward to the dessert than the first dance. Remember formal dining etiquette rules: Don’t eat before everyone else is served. And don’t stuff your face like you’ve been stranded on an Island for 10 years.
Don’t RSVP for your guest It’s bad enough that the bride and groom won’t receive RSVPs for most of their guests. But if you RSVP for yourself and then decide to bring a date, do not expect the bride and groom to welcome your late date with open arms. And really, with the painful seating chart process, do you blame them?
Don’t compare the wedding to other weddings It’s the bride and groom’s happy day. Don’t make comments on what you would do differently, or that so-and-so had a much better wedding, or that the bride’s gown made her look chubby. Accolades are appreciated; loud criticisms and comparisons are not.
Ways to be a good guest: Tell the bride she’s beautiful (always appreciated). Compliment the groom’s choice in ladies. Let the couple know how much you enjoyed yourself!
